Submental refers to the area underneath your chin. Submental fat is fat accumulation under the chin. This is a common phenomenon and can often occur in individuals who are not otherwise overweight. This area around the neck can be resistant to weight reduction measures.

Excess fat under the chin can also be referred to as a “double chin” because the individual appears to have two chins.

Currently, the only treatment for excess fat under the chin is surgical liposuction. This procedure is called a submental lipectomy and is a surgical procedure which removes local fat deposits under the chin.

Now there is a research study for reducing excess fat under the chin. This study is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of an investigational, injectable medication to reduce the excess fat under the chin.
